Joe Biden Inauguration 2021: 10 Of The Most Stirring Moments You Missed

A US Capitol Police Officer who went viral after he was shown attempting to combat far right Trump-supporting rioters inside the Capitol by himself, and reportedly lure them away from the unguarded Senate Chambers has been promoted.

Officer Eugene Goodman has since been awarded a Congressional Gold Medal and has is now serving as Acting Deputy House Sergeant. He was met with huge applause when he entered the Capitol for the inauguration yesterday and, as part of his new role, was tasked with escorting the new Vice President and Second Gentleman during the ceremony.

Amanda Gorman stole the show with the recital of her inaugural poem, in which she became the youngest ever inaugural poet. The 22-year-old delivered the poem with such poise, confidence and intelligence that Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were just some of the high-profile people to congratulate her publicly on an outstanding performance.

For Gorman, she appeared to be equally as happy to meet some of her idols, taking to her Instagram Stories to share some fangirl moments with the Obamas ('I am deceased'), her 'selfie of my year' with the Clintons and with Lady Gaga ('In love with u [sic]'). Ah, the happiness.

During the primetime Celebrating America special in the evening, photographers captured this adorable moment between the new president and his eight-month-old grandson Beau. The president watched Demi Lovato perform on a screen while dancing with his young grandson, the son of his son Hunter Biden, who is named in honour of Joe's second son who passed away at the age of 46 in 2015 with brain cancer.

This supportive moment between Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris was one which received lots of attention and love on the internet. While both women are adored by their supporters, the symbolism of the moment of two high-profile, pioneering and successful Black women supporting each other on the world's biggest stage - one that has so often been dominated by white men, perhaps no more particularly felt than during the last four years - was hugely significant.

As Donald Trump famously broke with tradition, choosing to shun the inauguration ceremony and depart for his Florida residence of Mar-A-Lago early, his Vice President Pence continued with the status quo. As Joe and Jill Biden did not escort the former president and First Lady down the stairs of the US Capitol, Kamala and Doug Emhoff did with Mike and Karen Pence.

Among the many high-profile fans to congratulate Gorman was Hamilton creator Lin Manuel-Miranda. Gorman responded pretty quickly asking him if he caught the two references to the award-winning Broadway show, to which he replied: 'You were perfect. Perfectly written, perfectly delivered. Every bit of it. Brava!'

For the musical theatre fans wondering, the New York Times reports that the lines in question were: 'For while we have our eyes on the future/ history has its eyes on us' which is a tribute to the Hamilton song 'History Has Its Eyes On You'. The second was 'Everyone shall sit under their own vine, and fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid' a scripture which is recited by the George Washington character in the musical.

After Lopez left the podium during her performance of 'This Land Is Your Land/America The Beautiful/Let's Get Loud', the singer was thrilled to see Vice President Kamala Harris, who appeared to be as equally thrilled to see her.

On Inauguration Day, another historic moment was made over on Twitter. Famously, four years ago, President Donald Trump blocked Teigen when she replied to his tweet saying 'lol, no one likes you'. With a new president, Teigen tweeted the account to ask if she could unblocked so she could see what the president of her country was saying. Her wish was granted and she became one of the first to be followed by the new president, along with a list of White House officials.

While there were many symbolic and potentially overlooked fashion nods worn by politicians past and present at the ceremony, one which was missed by many was Senator Elizabeth Warren's pink scarf.

The bottom of the scarf was emblazoned with the Planned Parenthood logo, thus demonstrating her support for the organisation which suffered a torrid four years under the Trump administration.

In between being sworn in on the steps of the Capitol and watching a primetime concert to celebrate his new presidency, Biden got straight to work - heading to the Oval Office to sign several Executive Orders.

Among them were: Mandating the wearing of masks on federal property to protect people from Coronavirus, re-joining the Paris Climate Change agreement which Donald Trump controversially pulled the US out of, ended an Trump-ordered travel ban from Muslim-majority countries and stopped the funding of that infamous 'wall' between the US and Mexico, reports the BBC.
