After a month of speculation, following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's announcement that they will step back as senior members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, we now know the exact date of the transition.

According to a spokesperson for the couple, Meghan and Harry will formally step down as senior royals on March 31, 2020.

This means they will no longer carry out official engagements and duties on behalf of the Queen and royal family, but this process will be reviewed after a year, reports the BBC.

They will no longer have an office at Buckingham Palace and discussions on whether the couple can continue to use the world 'Royal' are still the subject of negotiations, according to reports.

In January, Meghan and Harry announced they would be stepping back from royal duties, become financially independent from the monarchy and split their time between the UK and North America, in line with establishing their new charitable foundation.

A couple of weeks later, following some initial talks, the Queen gave her grandson and Meghan's decision her blessing , sharing that a 'constructive and supportive way forward' had been decided upon.

The move came after months of press intrusion for the couple, particularly Meghan, who had previously emotionally described the toll it had taken on her, especially as she adjusted to becoming a new mother to the couple's first child Archie.

While exact details of what the Sussexes will do next are still to be released, it is largely expected that their global charitable foundation will focus on key meaningful issues to the pair, like education rights, women's empowerment, HIV and Aids, mental health, community and the environment.

Ahead of the March 31 exit, Meghan and Harry - who have been in Canada and the USA for the past few weeks - are expected to return to the UK for several events including the Commonwealth Day Service next month.
