Calling Thunberg 'a leader of our time', the 44-year-old praised her profusely, writing: 'It is because of Greta, and young activists everywhere, that I am optimistic about what the future holds'.
The Titanic actor said it was an 'honour' to spend time with Thunberg and that he hopes her message is 'a wake-up call to world leaders everywhere that the time for inaction is over'.
DiCaprio finished off his Instagram post, which has been liked almost 4.5 million times since its posting, by doubling down on his support for Thunberg and her activism, adding that the environmentalists had 'made a commitment to support one another, in hopes of securing a brighter future for our planet'.
Thunberg began her protests when she was just 15, striking from school on a Friday to protest in her native country Sweden against the lack of action to halt climate change and global warming.
Aside from DiCaprio, she's found legions of supporters all across the world and her recent emotional speech (and glare at Donald Trump) at the United Nations, scorning world leaders for 'stealing my dreams and my childhood with your empty words', made international headlines.
DiCaprio has predominantly dedicated his charity work to the environment, while also weaving it into his work as an actor. When awarded his long-awaited Oscar for The Revenant in 2016 he used his speech to deliver a call to action, telling the audience: 'Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.'
