Some people will have you believe that the end of summer is something to grieve, marking an end to post-work socials in the evening sunshine and a shift towards shorter, greyer days. But for the sartorially minded among us, it is joyous, because it signifies our favourite fashion moment – a reunion with our autumn wardrobe, and the chance to update it with energising new pieces. The AW24 shows saw a crop of exciting new trends, as well as fresh updates on some old ones – and high-street stalwart Next has surpassed itself with its own interpretation of some of the highlights.

The Leopard-Print Jacket
While it might not have been all over the runways, leopard-print outerwear was everywhere on the streets around the shows, with models, editors and stylists all rocking different versions. It’s the perfect statement piece to dress up a pared-back look, like jeans and a T-shirt – or, as shown here, to add interest to an all-black outfit.
The ‘Quiet Luxury’ Knit
Our love of the understated-but-expensive look shows no sign of going anywhere. When autumn rolls around, that means luxurious knits in on-trend colours – and Next has really understood the brief with a collection of richly patterned pieces in quality fabrics. We love this pullover/scarf set in one of the season’s hottest shades, olive. Wear with wide-legged jeans for a laid-back luxe look.
The Wild West Nod
With everyone from Beyoncé to Chappell Roan embracing cowboycore, this is one aesthetic that’s staying the course. For a more subtle take than a hot-pink Stetson (perfect for Chappell, but not universally flattering), look for fringing on knitwear, jackets or accessories.
The Argyle Pattern
Summer might have us dreaming of tropical beaches, but autumn is a time for imagining ourselves amid the misty mountains of Scotland. This season’s crop of Highlands-inspired knits will transport you there in mind, if not in person. Next has a great selection, ranging from oversized jumpers to tank tops that would look perfect over a crisp shirt.
The Boho Throw-Over
The bohemian trend dominated the AW24 runways, with feminine ruffles, playful layering and chiffon dresses. Make like OG boho poster-girl Sienna Miller and add some whimsy to your wardrobe with fringing, flared jeans and a statement shaggy coat – like this iconic example from Next. The Suede Jacket
Is it part of the western trend? Maybe, but we think it deserves its own mention. Suede is a fabric that never goes away, bringing a sense of luxurious texture to the most ordinary of outfits. This season, oversized suede totes are having a moment, but it's this jacket that has caught our eye.
The Colour-Block Co-ord
In case you missed it, burgundy is officially the colour of AW24. Deep reds just feel right for winter – they tend to appear each year at the turning of the seasons, and this shade is reminiscent of fallen leaves. We love this head-to-toe take on the trend, which also manages to strike that sartorial Holy Grail of blending style with comfort.
