Nicola Coughlan turning heads is nothing new. The Bridgerton actor has become one of the red carpet's most interesting, exciting dressers in recent years moving with pace between classic Hollywood glamour and a more directional spirit.

Coughlan's latest dress, worn at Canneseries where she picked up the Konbini Commitment Award, straddles the two pockets of thought. Designed by Mithridate's Daniel Fletcher, the lime green form fit dress came not only embellished with thousands of hand-stitched sequins but with a throw-over detail that adds that more intriguing touch she's often found sporting.

Fastened, or should we say placed? No, it'll have to be tied across the top was a set of would-be sweater sleeves. 'It was just one sort of long, long sleeve piece, but it was so beautiful,' Coughlan tells ELLE UK. 'I just loved wearing it.'

The dress was a long time coming as Coughlan and Fletcher had been in talks together to work together for sometime. 'I've known Daniel for years and he's so lovely and the stars aligned in this moment. He came to the fitting himself, he's that kind of person that's so hands-on and involved, and I just like loved the little like adjustments that he made, like the little shrug. I kept calling it a little tube because it wasn't really a jumper, it was just like a shrug around the shoulder.'

The dress is a significant one beyond its jaunty style as it marks Fletcher's first custom look at Mithridate. 'It's really special to be a part of a designer's trajectory,' Coughlan continued. 'Especially when you know them. He's so talented and deserves all the success in the world.'

Though on first glance the looks Coughlan wears run the gamut, I wonder if she notices a common thread amongst them all? 'I think it's how I feel when I wear them, I suppose. I love to wear something very different from the last day. I think it's really fun to switch it up.'

'I like the differentiation between the regular me and the red carpet me because it's nice to know that that's my professional life and my private life is different'

While we're not anticipating that Coughlan is always wearing custom runway looks to the local watering hole, naturally there is going to be some carry through of the advice and guidance she has picked up along the way. 'I think that would be in terms of silhouette,' she says. 'But, I like the differentiation between the regular me and the red carpet me because it's nice to know that my professional life and my private life is different, but I take certain necklines or the length of a hem. It's really interesting getting to understand fashion on that level and the difference that cut can make.'

This growing knowledge has made Coughlan a personal style icon for a generation, but she says you wouldn't really know it on her days off. 'I think I have so much fun with Aimee,' she laughs. 'But it does feel like on my day to day that I'm extremely low key to the point of like a slob a lot of the time.'

Is she not tempted to reach into the wardrobe and pull something fabulous she's worn before? 'A lot go back to the designers, which was a good thing because I had a tiny flat,' Coughlan explains. 'But there's certain things I have, like I have the dress from the Barbie premiere, and I have the dress from the Bridgerton London premiere. A lot of the stuff just goes back to the designer and then I've got the pictures to remember them by.'
