After bringing some Old Hollywood glamour to the SAG Awards last weekend, Selena Gomez went for a different look at the Academy Awards. The Emilia Pérez actress and ceremony presenter wore an embellished custom nude Ralph Lauren gown. The dress was made by a team of 12 artisans who sewed Rosemont crystals by hand and applied more than 16,000 drops of glass to the piece. She accessorized with a diamond necklace.
The star posed on her own on the red carpet, although she arrived with her fiancé, Benny Blanco.
Gomez does not have an individual nomination at the Academy Awards this evening. However, Emilia Pérez is up for Best Picture.
Gomez spoke to ELLE for our Women in Hollywood issue about her first impressions of the project when she reviewed its script. “It was one of those things that you read and thought, how on earth could this be made? It’s too crazy,” she said. “It could be done in a bad way, but it was so exciting at the same time.”
The star described this moment promoting the film as a career highlight. “[Talking] about a movie that’s so important and moving and beautiful, it’s been a wow moment for me,” she said, adding of Emilia Pérez’s awards show buzz, “I definitely didn’t expect all of what’s happening. It just feels like a time in my life that I’m extremely grateful for. Honestly, every day I wake up thinking, How did I get to do this?”
Gomez said she hopes that the industry can see Emilia Pérez as “a great example to other creatives of how to be able to allow us to enrich each of these characters. [Director Jacques Audiard] let us do that with such freedom. It felt like you could see it on screen. Every one of us would love to just, again, give people hope. But yes, there’s much more to do [for women in Hollywood].”
