How to Shop for a Couch

        linebreak
        HEARST

Here are a few key things to consider as you set out to make a purchase:

        • Dimensions. First and foremost, you want a couch that fits your space. Measure before you add anything to your cart. Morse recommends using tape to map out potential dimensions on your floor. Keep in mind that sofas that sit lower to the ground tend to be more difficult to get in and out of, which might make them feel less comfortable. While deep seats are ideal for curling up and hunkering down, you’ll want to make sure the back cushions are substantial—or supplement with throw pillows—for lumbar support.
        • Durability. This will be reflected in the price. There’s nothing wrong with budget options, but be aware that you get what you pay for. A healthy price range is between $3,000-$4,000. The more you spend, the longer it’s likely to last. For couches that fall below that window, you can expect it will need replacing after about five years. Flipping and rotating your cushions (if possible) is often overlooked but actually can impact the longevity of your couch, according to Morse.
        • Materials. What kind of fabric do you want? This may depend on the climate you live in. Cotton, linen, and leather are the coolest options. Heavy-duty textiles like velvet or wool are warmer. And, chenille is surprisingly durable, particularly for pet owners. Don’t forget that each material presents its own set of cleaning instructions. Leather is the easiest to wipe clean. Morse also recommends finding out if the material is free of harmful chemicals.
        • Cushion composition. “Slouch-friendly cushions (no foam core) require regular fluffing, so even if you’re looking for cozy comfort, it’s best to still look for some sort of foam core within the seat cushions,” Morse says. Cushions without foam will inevitably sag with time. For the ultimate balance of support and comfort, Morse says that feather or fiber wrapped around a foam core is the way to go.
        • Internal structure. One tip Morse offers is to gauge how easily you can feel the couch’s frame. Armrests are a good place to test this. If you can feel the inner materials, be it wood or metal, that’s a sign of lower-quality materials.
        • Delivery. Wisely, Morse also advises reading the fine print to see if the cost of delivery is included and whether that comprises assembly. It’s a major bonus if so.
        • Reviews. Lastly, “Read reviews, good and bad,” Morse says.

        • For leather, always look at the manufacturer’s instructions for warnings about which chemicals are safe to use. Some may weaken the leather or cause discoloration, so don’t skip this step. When in doubt, a damp cloth can be used to wipe the surface clean.
        • Upholstery is a bit trickier. Vacuuming is safe for pet hair, dust, and dander. On liquid spills, first use paper towels to soak up any excess moisture prior to treating. Then, blot with water and a small splash of detergent. Don’t rub, as that can make the stain worse.
        • Morse recommends having your couch professionally cleaned once or twice a year.
        • Always check to see if cushion covers are removable and machine washable. If so, it will make your life a lot easier.
