Camila Cabello knew exactly what she was doing on the MTV VMAs stage, performing to a crowd that included her ex-boyfriend Shawn Mendes. The singer did a dramatic, empowered rendition of “Godspeed,” during which she sang into a camera and later smashed a laptop. She finished the performance with her dancers surrounding her.
Users on X, formerly known as Twitter, immediately shared clips of the performance.
Cabello, Mendes, and his ex Sabrina Carpenter all performed on the VMAs stage this evening. (So far, that has not resulted in any drama.) Cabello and Carpenter have both referenced their alleged past love triangle with Mendes in their music.
Carpenter alluded to it in “Taste,” while fans believe Cabello addressed it in her recent song “can friends kiss?” That situation is now very much behind them though, as Carpenter has recently been dating Barry Keoghan, and Cabello and Mendes are both single after briefly reconciling last year.
Beyond her performance, Cabello celebrated two VMA nominations tonight: Best Pop Artist and Best Trending Video (“I LUV IT,” featuring Playboi Carti).
She released her album C, XOXO earlier this year and told Vogue in June that the project has lived in her for a long time. “I feel like everything in my life and my work led up to me being capable of making this album,” she said. “I feel like I came close to certain aspects of it before—all the way back to different parts of unreleased songs from when I was 16 and using GarageBand. It just took a while to get here.”
