It’s time to start learning Italian, because Emily in Paris is headed back...to Rome. The fun, fashionable Netflix sensation isn’t over yet, and there’s a lot more to explore after Emily moves to Italy for new career opportunities—and a new man. Here’s everything we know about Emily’s next chapter so far.

Was Emily in Paris renewed for season 5?

Yes, Netflix officially announced the news on Sept. 16, 2024 days after the season 4, part 2 premiere. “We’re thrilled with the incredible response to this season of Emily in Paris and excited to return for a fifth to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!” Darren Star told Netflix’s Tudum.

Speculation was already bubbling up in May 2024, when a major hint dropped during the Cannes Film Festival at the amfAR Gala, which raises money for HIV and AIDS research. One of the prizes up for auction was a guest role in Emily in Paris’ fifth season.

Supermodel Winnie Harlow and actress Paris Jackson presented the prize on behalf of the show’s creator, Darren Star. “One of you is going to leave here tonight with a walk-on role in season 5 of the hit TV show Emily In Paris,” Jackson told the crowd. She and Harlow also mentioned the season would begin filming in mid 2025, according to Variety.

Ramin Setoodeh, the co-editor-in-chief of Variety, gave an update on X, stating that the winner had bid 250,000 euros, which translates to about $271,121.50.

However, as Variety pointed out, Netflix had not officially renewed the series for a fifth season at the time. The amfAR website listed that the walk-on-role is “contingent upon season 5 pickup.” Thankfully, the winner didn’t leave empty handed.

“To tide you over until then, the winning bidder and a guest are invited to attend the Los Angeles première of Emily In Paris Season 4 this August,” amfAR added.

When will Emily in Paris season 5 premiere?

All 10 episodes of Emily in Paris will return to Netflix on Thursday, December 18.

What will season 5 of Emily in Paris be about?

“This season is a Tale of Two Cities. Rome and Paris. Straddling both, Emily takes love and life to the next level,” creator Darren Star told Tudum.

Netflix also revealed that season 5 will take place in Venice, Italy. Here’s how the streamer’s official synopsis: “Now the head of Agence Grateau Rome, Emily faces professional and romantic challenges as she adapts to life in a new city. But just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle, until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships. Tackling conflict with honesty, Emily emerges with deeper connections, renewed clarity, and a readiness to embrace new possibilities.”

During Emily in Paris season 4, Emily ventured out of her French fantasy and headed to Italy. There, she met the handsome Marcello, played by newcomer Eugenio Franceschini. Unfortunately, she met him because Gabriel left her abandoned on a mountainside as he careened after Camille—who, as it turns out, is not really pregnant. The season ended with Emily heading to Rome with Marcello because she wants to be put first in her relationships. Gabriel discovered Camille’s non-pregnancy. In an interview with Deadline, Star assured fans that Emily will return to France eventually. Perhaps in season 5?

“She didn’t change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome. She is working in Rome sometimes. Sylvie’s company has an office in Rome. Emily’s getting that on its feet,” he said. “I don’t necessarily think that it means a permanent—in my mind, it’s definitely not a permanent—move to Rome. We’re not leaving Paris.”

He continued, “I think Gabriel realized that he doesn’t want to let Emily go so easily, and he might have made a big mistake. They certainly had a big fight and a cooling off period. But I think he realized that by the end of the season, that there’s something that he doesn’t want to let Emily go. I don’t know what that means. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to be together instantly or ever. I don’t know, but I think he feels there’s unfinished business with the two of them.”

As he confirmed to Tudum, “It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome.”

Lilly Collins said there’ll be more of Emily and Marcello’s romance in season 5 too. “I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection. A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season,” she said on Good Morning America.

In another interview, Star explained why his characters have so much trouble with love.

“I don’t think there’s much of a story once happily-ever-after happens,” said Star. “These are very passionate relationships and strong characters and what keeps me engaged is finding those obstacles that feel truly emotional.”

Who is in the season 5 cast?

The confirmed cast members include: Lily Collins (Emily Cooper), Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie Grateau), Ashley Park (Mindy Chen), Lucas Bravo (Gabriel), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Bruno Gouery (Luc), William Abadie (Antoine Lambert), Lucien Laviscount (Alfie), Eugenio Franceschini (Marcello), Thalia Besson (Genevieve), Paul Forman (Nico), Arnaud Binard (Laurent G), Minnie Driver (Princess Jane), Bryan Greenberg (Jake), and Michèle Laroque (Yvette)

Ahead of the new season, Bravo made headlines when he fueled speculation that he might not return to the series. He said in an October 2024 interview with Indie Wire that he had begun to feel differently about his role.

“The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take. I’ve never been so far away from him,” Bravo candidly shared.

He added that in the first season, “there was a lot of me in [Gabriel].” Since then, he feels they have “made him kind of unaware of his surroundings” and are “always victimizing” him, making it seem like Gabriel is “being manipulated by everyone.”

“It kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole. I really grew apart from him,” Bravo said. The actor added that he tried to talk to the team about his concerns, but “there is only so much” he can influence the “limits of a script.”

Bravo continued, “I tried for seasons to bring nuances but we don’t have much liberty on set. We cannot change a word or an emotion. They know what they want and we just have to comply...It makes me question if I want to be part of Season 5 […] because my contract ends at Season 4. I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self. Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.”

But that doesn’t mean he’s completely turned on Emily in Paris.

“I love the show,” he continued. “It started everything for me. I love the show and the people in it. With saying that, I feel like I am not being nice or grateful, but when you love something you want it to be…you want the best version of it. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been frustrated with the direction by character is taking. But we’ll see where it goes. The show is not over.”

In April 2025, Bravo seemed to change his mind. In an interview with Parade, he said, “We’re starting filming in May. I think it’s the best season so far.” He added, “I had lunch with Darren a few days back, and he told me a bit without telling me too much. I think fans are going to lose it. It’s the craziest one so far.”

One cast member who actually won’t return for season 5 is Camille Razat, who starred as Gabriel’s on-off girlfriend Camille. When Netflix confirmed the cast list for season 5, her name was noticeably missing from the list, according to Deadline. Darren Star also explained why she won’t be returning to the series: “I think her story kind of had a natural finish,” he told the outlet.

Razat confirmed the news in an Instagram post on April 23, writing that she “made the decision to step away from Emily in Paris.” She later added, “This character has meant a lot to me, and I feel that her storyline has naturally come to an end. It felt like the right moment to explore new horizons.”

On July 2, Deadline announced two new additions to the season 5 cast: Bryan Greenberg (Suits LA) will play Jake, an American expat living in Paris, and French actress Michèle Laroque (Better Days) will play Yvette, Sylvie’s old friend.

    Has production started yet?

Yes, production began in May in Rome, and they are currently filming in Paris, according to Deadline.

Next, they’ll circle back to Italy and film in Venice from August 15 to 25. Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto Region, shared the announcement on Instagram, writing, “This is extraordinary news, confirming how our region is increasingly attractive for major global audiovisual productions, thanks to its unique heritage and the teamwork between institutions and industry professionals.”
