Brat summer might be over, but Lorde summer is just beginning. The New Zealand singer made her triumphant return to the Met Gala tonight wearing a silver two-piece set from Thom Browne, featuring a layered maxi skirt and a bandeau top that seemed to defy the laws of gravity. She posed with a matching silver suit jacket and kept the rest of the look minimal, sporting a diamond Cartier bracelet and natural makeup.

To complement her backless look, the pop star also wore a silver fish charm in her braid.

The appearance marks Lorde’s first Met Gala since 2021, when she wore a Bode gown up-cycled with found objects including pressed pennies and 1940s Cracker Jack charms for the “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” celebration, according to Town & Country.

It’s been four years since Lorde’s last Met Gala and four years since her last full-length album, Solar Power, and the “Royals” artist is making it clear she’s back in the spotlight. After dropping her new single “What Was That” shortly after Easter, she’s gearing up to release her fourth studio album, Virgin, on June 27.

In a press release timed to the album announcement, she shared that “the colour of the album is clear. Like bathwater, windows, ice, spit. Full transparency. The language is plain and unsentimental. The sounds are the same wherever possible. I was trying to see myself, all the way through. I was trying to make a document that reflected my femininity: raw, primal, innocent, elegant, openhearted, spiritual, masc.”

She shared in a separate voice memo that “I’ve never felt more intentional with every single piece of what I’m doing. There’s such a deep ethos behind all of it, and it all braids together in the end.” Perhaps her Met Gala look might be some sort of Easter egg, then? Lorde fans, start your investigations.
