Tyla won her first Grammy in 2024, but this year, the singer chose not to attend the ceremony. Surprisingly, she has no nominations, even though she released her self-titled debut album last March to widespread praise.
In March 2024, Tyla spoke to GQ about winning her first Grammy for Best African Music Performance. She made history as the youngest African artist to win a Grammy in the process.
Hearing her name called was “very surreal,” Tyla said. “Still doesn't feel real. I didn’t expect it, honestly. Every time there was a new category, my heart would just sink because I’d be like, ‘Oh, the category is coming.’ And then, I mean, when he said my name, it didn’t register. So I was sitting there for a bit, not knowing that he called my name.”
In September, Tyla spoke to ELLE about how she viewed 2024 in her career: “I do feel like I’ve changed a lot in the span of a few months; people may not see it,” she began. “I’m excited to see that in my next album.”
She added of people comparing her to Rihanna or Britney Spears, “Initially I used to care. Recently I’ve just been feeling, ‘They’re gonna say what they wanna say, and it doesn’t even matter because I know it’s not that.’”
“This year was me introducing myself,” she added. “Next year I’m just gonna have fun. Do whatever, wear whatever. I’m just playing around a lot, and bringing a lot of my roots into my music. It’s still gonna be me, still sweaty vibes, but evolved.”
