Katy Perry took home the Video Vanguard Award at tonight’s MTV VMAs, while her one-time rival, now friend Taylor Swift arrived at the show with 12 nominations. Although the two stars don’t interact in public much, they had a sweet show of friendship during the ceremony.
Swift was filmed giving Perry a standing ovation during her Vanguard Video Award performance. She also sang along to Perry.
Perry and Swift reconciled in 2019 after years of their “Bad Blood” feud. Swift spoke about how they buried the hatchet to Rolling Stone in 2019. “Katy and I were talking about our signs...because we had this really, really long talk when we were reconnecting and stuff,” Swift said. “And I remember in the long talk, she was like, ‘If we had one glass of white wine right now, we’d both be crying.’ Because we were drinking tea. We’ve had some really good conversations.”
(Swift is a Sagittarius while Perry is a Scorpio. As the Astro Twins put it for ELLE, the two signs have a pretty spicy, “love-hate” dynamic: “You both love to have the last word, and deep down, you’re pretty sure you’re smarter than the rest of the population,” they write. “As friends, this makes you smugly superior comrades.”)
Perry shared her side of it to KIIS 1065’s “The Kyle and Jackie O Show, saying that as Swift was about to begin her Reputation tour, “I was finishing [my tour, and ] I realized how much we have in common. And maybe there’s only five other people in the world that can have the same type of conversations and understand where we're coming from, and that we should celebrate our commonality and our friendship and to be able to be there for each other.”
