Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have been together for over a decade. The pair began dating in 2011 and got married about a year later. That might seem fast, but they’d been friends for a while and could simply no longer deny the chemistry between them.
Today, Lively and Reynolds remain happily married and share three daughters—James, Inez, and Betty—and their fourth child, son Olin.

Lively and Reynolds met through work. The two starred in the superhero movie Green Lantern but didn't date at the time. They both were actually in other relationships. Lively was dating her Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgley, while Reynolds was married to Scarlett Johansson, a future on-screen superhero herself. They did appear together for the first time during Comic-Con in San Diego in 2010, preceding the film's release.

A few months later, Badgley and Lively split after three years together but supposedly remained friends.
A source told Us Weekly, “They’re professionals. They're still good friends and hang out on the set.”
They did not publicize the news of their break up right away, however.

At the end of that same year, Reynolds and Johansson released a joint statement to People confirming they were separating, which read, “After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love, and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.”
Reynolds filed for divorce a few weeks later in December.

Lively and Reynolds walked the red carpet premiere of Green Lantern in Hollywood on June 15, 2011. There were still no rumors of a romance, and Lively was actually romantically linked to Leonardo DiCaprio. Lively and DiCaprio were first photographed together in Cannes, France that May, and then spent the summer together. But it was a brief fling, and E! reported they ended things when the season changed.

People reported that Lively and Reynolds were dating shortly before Halloween, when she was seen exiting his apartment in Boston at the crack of dawn after his birthday weekend. A source told People at the time that the two are “very much a couple,” and “they’re really happy together.”

By Christmas time, Lively was already familiar with Reynolds' family, visiting his hometown of Vancouver in late December. Paparazzi caught a shot of them holding hands while walking in the streets between family time.

On September 9, 2012, Lively and Reynolds got married during a small secret ceremony with friends and family. The bride wore a couture gown designed by Marchesa, and Reynolds was in a classic Burberry suit.
“When Ryan first saw her, his face broke into a huge smile that crinkled his eyes,” a source told People. “They just stared at each other with absolute love. Their faces were lit up with the candlelight, and it looked like something out of a romance movie.”
The couple have since apologized for holding their event at Boone Hall in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Boone Hall is a former plantation, and wedding on one is generally viewed as distasteful and offensive given the site's history.
Reynolds said in an August 2020 interview with Fast Company, “It’s something we’ll always be deeply and unreservedly sorry for. It’s impossible to reconcile. What we saw at the time was a wedding venue on Pinterest. What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy. Years ago, we got married again at home—but shame works in weird ways. A giant f*cking mistake like that can either cause you to shut down or it can reframe things and move you into action. It doesn’t mean you won’t f*ck up again. But repatterning and challenging lifelong social conditioning is a job that doesn’t end.”
In 2019, the couple donated $2 million to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

A source spoke to Us Weekly around the same time about what makes Lively and Reynolds’ relationship work so well. They are both very family oriented.
“Blake and Ryan were both totally in agreement from the get-go that they’d put their kids before anything else; that’s why they didn’t want to rely on nannies,” one source said. “It’s worked out beautifully, and they’re proud of how they’ve prioritized family.”
A second source said that they balance parenting with their busy careers and “have a great system in place. They try to keep everything 50-50.”
It took some time for the couple to work out the right balance, but they are great communicators, the first source said: “They have their differences like any other couple, but things get resolved through open dialogue. There’s never sustained drama because they’re very quick to compromise.” Generally speaking, their marriage is wonderful, that source said: “Blake and Ryan have a very lighthearted vibe. They’re soulmates and just click.”
Towards the end of the month, Lively shared some new details about their early relationship on Amber Tamblyn's Substack show, Further Ado, released on February 22.
“When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time,” Lively revealed. “So that we could always prioritize our personal life.”
She continued, “That takes working really hard when we're not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that; it takes balance.”

“My wife directed a music video and fell in love with her editor @sreid2. She Insisted I work with him immediately and forever,” Reynolds wrote. “She was right. He became the irreplaceable 2nd half of our Deadpool editing room. I’ve spent 10 months with this genius and I’m never letting go. Ever.”
He then shared a selfie with Reid on set where he's in his Deadpool costume,and has his arm around his colleague.

In a TIME tribute for Michael J. Fox published on April 17, Reynolds shared a story about the beloved actor and an interaction with his daughter James. He began by praising Fox, joking that he “falls a lot,” but “not just because he has Parkinson’s...He falls a lot because he’s unafraid to fly.”
He then explained introducing one of the actor's most famous movies to his kids.
“Last year I watched Back to the Future with my 8-year-old daughter,” he wrote. “It's become her favorite film...I know how lucky I am to call Mike a friend. She still has no idea that I know him.”
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in the ‘90s, and went on to support fundraising efforts and promote awareness of the disease.
“I don't need to teach my daughter the level of compassion Mike has mastered,” Reynolds continued. “Or teach her to tell stories the way Mike tells stories. I need to teach her that it's okay to fall a lot. It's the absolute best way to know you're flying.”
James is actually named after Reynolds’ late father, who passed at 74-years-old, shortly after she was born. He also had Parkinson’s Disease. Reynolds has served on the board for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research since 2009.

Reynolds revealed on the Today show that, while Lively went to the Super Bowl with her best friend Taylor Swift, he was at home watching all four of their children alone for the first time.
“You know, single dad. I’m a Reba McEntire song,” he joked. “A single dad just doing it for them, right? Took them to the park, told them mommy left when they were young.”
He added, “No, we had a good time. No one died, so that’s nice! At four kids, you just surrender, right? 24/7 surrender. When we had our fourth, I was so happy because I wanted to make sure we always had someone on hand. Now we’re covered.”
While on the topic of Swift, the hosts mentioned how the internet was speculating whether or not the pop star revealed the name of Reynolds’ and Lively’s fourth baby through one of her songs from The Tortured Poets Department. This wouldn’t be the first time, as Swift did so in her 2020 track “Betty.”
“We always wait for Taylor to tell us what the child’s name is,” Reynolds replied. “And I will say this: We’re still waiting.”
He teased, “She’s a prolific writer—I mean, what are we doing here? And ‘lazy’ is not a word I’d attach to Taylor.”
Reynolds also sat down on Today with Hoda & Jenna with his IF co-stars John Krasinksi and Cailey Fleming, and they talked Swift concerts that they’ve attended.
“I’m about to go to the Madrid show. I’m very excited. My wife and kids have been to, like, five or six now,” he said.
“Well they are besties,” Hoda Kotb chimed in.
“Yeah, they’re obsessed,” Reynolds replied.
He also admitted that this will be his first Swift concert, explaining that it’s because he’s “been buried in a work bubble for the past year and a half and yeah, it’s a problem but I’ve gotten help, and I’m getting out.”
On May 29, Reynolds and Hugh Jackman spoke to People about their 17-year friendship. Reynolds compared it to his lengthy relationship with Lively.
“I think the secret sauce to a long-lasting Hollywood friendship is not too dissimilar to having a partner or a marriage,” he said. “I am genuinely rooting for you, all the time. I want you to win. It’s the same way I feel about Blake. As I’m rooting for her, I know she’s rooting for me, and it’s why we’re so connected.”
They also discussed their connections to the United States and their home countries, and Reynolds revealed his entire family has dual-citizenship with Canada. Jackman asked Reynolds if his kids see themselves as part Canadian.
“It was a really important thing for us that we spent time in Australia...[and] they felt part Australian, and I'm really proud of that,” Jackman said of his own kids, Oscar, 24, and Ava, 19. “I think if you ask them, they’ll say, ‘I’m Australian.’ And they’ll say, ‘No, I'm American too, but I’m Australian.’ How are you with the kids? Is that something for you?”
Reynolds replied, “My kids, they have Canadian passports as well, and they feel a real connection to that. It's a point of pride of theirs. They’ve also spent huge amounts of their formative years in Canada and particularly Vancouver.”
He added, “They love being from Canada. They tell people they are. ‘Oh, I'm half Canadian, half American.’”
That same day, Reynolds and Lively were seen at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show in Madrid, Spain. They were seated in the VIP section with three children who appeared to be their daughters James, Inez, and Betty.

On Wednesday, July 3, Hugh Jackman shared a pic of Reynolds offering him a ticket to the gun show—the star has been working out hard again to play Deadpool and this photo of his massive arms might be the perfect promo. Jackman captioned the image, “‘You want me to put this away?’ — Ryan Reynolds, co-star, mouth breather, a--hole.”
Lively was very quick to jump in the comments, writing, “My thirst has been trapped.”
Reynolds shared the photo in his Instagram Stories, writing over it, “This photo is from my private collection. How dare you?” adding, “You’ve brought shame upon my house.”
Lively was keeping track of her husband’s appearances on social media again later that month. She shared a clip of Reynolds at a Deadpool & Wolverine event holding a sweet dog named Peggy, who he introduced to the crowd and hinted was perhaps going to make a cameo in the film.
Over the clip, she wrote in her Stories, “SOS He's trying to get me pregnant again. Put the dog that you find adorable in spite of societal k9 expectations away and take off the damn teal suit! Rude.”
In the video, Reynolds handles Peggy and tells the audience, “She won ugliest dog in Britain, but we're not telling her that because she is a 10 in our hearts, isn't she? And that tongue, by the way, is real. And I have tasted it.”
He adds, “This dog went through more training than Hugh Jackman did in the gym this morning. And we love her very, very much, yes we do.”
Then on July 14, she posted about him again, sharing how much she hopes he’s missing her in her Instagram Stories by sharing a couple’s selfie.
Over the photo, Lively wrote, “Stop missing me on your press tour. Get out there and hustle boy (which is girl code for don’t you ever stop missing me for a second).”
The couple revealed the name of their fourth child on July 22, during the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine while Reynolds was speaking to the audience.
“I want to start by saying thank you to my wife Blake, who is here,” Reynolds said. “I want to thank my kids James, Inez, Betty, Olin, who are here: I hope that, if I’m lucky, this moment will be the most traumatic thing—that is, the contents of this movie—that happens in your wondrous life.”
On July 26, Reynolds confirmed the sex of his fourth child with Lively in a conversation with Walking 4 Hope founder John Bell. In a post on the actor’s social media, John begins by saying, “What I do now keeps me alive daily, because I’ve made my peace with death. I’m gonna be reunited with him at some point but it damn right ain’t now.”
Reynolds responded, “The resilience it takes to put one foot in front of the other, as many times as you’ve done it, and transmute that much grief into something powerfully useful. I’m very grateful that you shared his story.”
He added, “I want to share with you that I too have a son, and if I love him one tenth as much as you love Jake, I feel like I’ve done a pretty damn good job.”

Reynolds got cheeky as his wife continued her press tour for It Ends With Us. Reynolds, his mother, and his friend and Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman all crashed a junket interview for one of Lively’s onscreen love interests, Brandon Sklenar. Sklenar plays Atlas in the film.
Lively shared footage of the interruptions and played dumb to what happened in an August 6 Instagram post. “Just woke up. What’d I miss? 🌸 @itendswithusmovie 🌸” she wrote.
On August 24, the couple enjoyed Taylor Swift’s pool party at her mansion on Rhode Island. They were photographed sharing a kiss right outside the house. Lively wore a floral print pair of bathing shorts and an orange bikini top. Reynolds was in a pink short-sleeved shirt and blue baseball cap.

Reynolds attended HubSpot’s INBOUND tech conference in Boston on Friday, September 20, speaking on stage with author and moderator Marcus Collins. During the conversation, the actor shared some personal work he had done on his approach to “conflict resolution” that benefited his parenting style.
“I took a workshop on conflict resolution, and that changed my entire life,” he began. “I just didn’t know how to process things that I felt. Because I [had a] scarcity mindset when I was younger. I didn’t know how to unfold that thing in your brain that conditions you just always to win or be right. Something I love about [conflict resolution], and I know this is not very fancy, but what I love about it is that you can meet somebody where they are, and you don’t have to be right or wrong. You can disagree and still connect.”
He continued, “I have four kids and so far, none of them seem to have that [scarcity mindset], partly because they were born on ‘Easy Street.’ Parents today are so different. We’re so soft. I don’t yell. I grew up with like—it was nuts, it was an improvised militia...Now it’s like, I can go look at all my resources for parenting and remind myself how to be perfectly compassionate.”
In late September, the couple was photographed walking in New York City two days in a row. On September 23, Lively stepped out in a brown sweater with a pink daisy on it and jeans. Reynolds complemented her in a pale pink cardigan, white T-shirt, and dark jeans.
The next day, they wore navy looks. Lively had on a white long-sleeve top and a purple tweed vest. She finished the outfit off with navy pants. Reynolds wore a navy hat and matching slacks. On Friday, October 4, Reynolds shared a selfie of himself and Lively enjoying dinner at New York City restaurant Cafe Chelsea overlaid with the song “Autumn in New York” by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Lively was wearing a black leather coat and hoop earrings with red lipstick. Reynolds had on glasses and a blue sweater with a black collar.
On October 11, the couple were on a double date with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at The Corner Store. Lively wore a dark brown mesh dress with skirt slits over fishnet stockings and a matching pair of vinyl boots. Reynolds was wearing blue pants with a white zipper top featuring a navy blue collar and gold lining.

In a December 13 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds shared how he and Lively want to raise their kids outside of the spotlight.
“We try to give them as normal a life as possible,” Reynolds explained. “I try not to impose upon them the difference in their childhood to my childhood or my wife’s childhood...We both grew up very working class, and I remember when they were very young, I used to say or think, like, ‘Oh God, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid,’ or, ‘I never would’ve had this luxury of getting takeout,’ or whatever.”
He continued, “Then I realized that that’s not really their bag of rocks to carry. They’re already very much in touch with gratitude and understanding the world enough to have a strong sense of empathy.”
And he thinks the parenting results speak for themselves.
“Those are the things that I would think [would indicate] we’re doing an OK job—if our kids can empathize with other people and other kids,” he said.
He did admit it won’t ever be like his experience.
“Yes, it’s different,” said Reynolds. “When I was a kid, you would just suck it up, get out of the house and be back by sundown, which I just can’t even imagine now.”
Reynolds also talked about his decision to take a break from work on camera and exploring other projects.
“I’m still working in the sense that I’m writing, whether on Boy Band or another thing I can’t talk about yet. I don’t have an ‘idle hands are the devil’s plaything’ issue,” he shared. “If I’m not working, I don’t yearn for it constantly. Boredom is a very undervalued asset these days, too. We as a society just entertain ourselves to death 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

On February 16, the couple attended a celebration of Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary, SNL50, in New York City. Lively wore a stunning silver dress from Tamara Ralh fall/winter 2024 couture. The pair posed at the event together, with Reynolds wearing a classic black tux.
